We were to replace the decking and hand rails on this job but had to structurally secure it first. Upon removing the decking boards, it was discovered the deck frame was not attached to the house at all and the deck had no lateral bracing. So we opened up the subfloor and attached an angle bracket to the girder, and replaced the 6x6 piles that attached the first floor to the second floor. This brought the structure up to code as it was generally unsafe.
Afterwards, we replaced the deck top and finished it with vinyl hand rails, pickets and gates.
